Effects of Polypropylene Glycol at Very Low Concentrations on Rheological Properties at the Air–Water Interface and Foam Stability of Sodium Bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate Aqueous Solutions. Langmuir, 36(34), 10043-10050.

To protect the environment, the consumption of surfactants with poor biodegradability needs to be reduced. However, the effect of this reduction on  foam stability is negative. Therefore, approaches to achieve high performance with small quantities of surfactant, including the introduction of additives into surfactant solutions to enhance surface-active properties, have been investigated. The present study investigates the effects of very low concentrations of polypropylene glycol (PPG) on the rheological properties of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) aqueous solutions at the surface for the precise control of foam properties. Through surface tension measurements, experiments with a Langmuir trough, the characterization of the viscoelastic properties of liquid-air interfaces with an AOT and PPG mixture using an automatic drop tensiometer (TRACKER™  by TECLIS) and , finally, foam characterization, the authors show that very low concentrations of PPG markedly affected air−water interfacial rheological properties and contributed to foam stabilization in the entire solution.

In this study, the authors investigated the influence of the formulation parameters, in particular the type of surfactant, on the physico-chemical properties of oil in water nano-emulsions. Six different surfactants were selected based on their similar HLB value (around 15) but different chemical features. First, all the surfactants were characterized in terms of surface tension at an air-liquid interface and interfacial tension at an oil-liquid interface using an automatic drop tensiometer (TRACKER™  by TECLIS). The nano-emulsions were then generated and characterized in terms on  their physico-chemical properties and stability.

The main result of this study is that the surfactant ability to reduce the tension at the O/W interface is closely related to the stability of the nano-emulsions, allowing the prediction of their medium or long-term stability.
